The Artificial Woman
a new musical by Steve Gunderson and Amy Gerstler

The Artificial Woman made its world premiere at UC Santa Cruz's eXperimental Theater in 2022, directed by Kirsten Brandt. This cast of undergraduate students was the first to bring these characters to life. A story of love, grief, and art, The Artificial Woman recounts the tempestuous love affair between famous artists Oskar Kokoschka and Alma Mahler in early twentieth century Vienna. Pondering themes of musedom, womanhood, and what it means to be alive, The Artificial Woman, herself, guides us through a poetic and musical journey.

Made for Artists, About Artists

Working on this show was any actor's dream. The writers were in constant collaboration with the cast, crew, and directors -- tailoring and tinkering to create a truly magical product.

"We live, make a mess - in pain and in mirth - then return to the earth. It happens so fast. Our bodies are not what lasts."

- The Artificial Woman
